Last of the Luna

We expected Kermit (our luna moth) to emerge some time last week. Because his rebirth was so poorly timed, we had to take him with us to Williamsburg lest we miss the big event. We carefully hung him in his net on top of the baggage and then gently took him to the room.

We hadn't even unpacked when the little dude began squirming inside his leaf barricade, making all kinds of scraping noises that set my mouse detecting senses on edge. We thought it was the big moment--but no. Three minutes later he became still. Three days later it was time to leave and still not even a slight rustling from the little green guy.

We carefully transported him to the car and tucked him in on top of the baggage. Then we got out and shifted some things around. In the process, we smashed the cocoon. It only gently smashed it, so we hoped for the best.

It has now been over three weeks in the 2-3 week cycle. I think we can safely say that Kermit is in luna moth heaven. My kids and I feel much remorse at our lack of vigilance, but Gem brightened when this thought struck her: "Hey, Mom! Maybe we can disect the cocoon!"
