Topsail Beach

Sinatra enjoying the tide pool

Racing on boogie boards through the tide pool.  Jon won.

The threesome that hit the waves beyond the tide pool.

Sugar loved the sand.

And on the second day she finally warmed up to the tide pool.

Blowing bubbles with daddy.

Popcorn stayed in the tide pool for about 45 min, trying to catch minnows with his hands or that bucket.  We didn't have nets with us.

And after finally giving up it was time for Cheetos.

Master sand castle builder in the construction zone.

She finally got brave enough to hang on, but it didn't last long.
Gem had a wonderful time in the surf.

Back at the campsite we had to build a fire to roast hotdogs and marshmallows.

Which one is sucking her fingers?
Hot dog roasting stick weapon.

Because boys make faces at cameras.

This big boy loves to play with fire.

Disney for the Thousandth Time

We went to Disney the week leading up to Easter. Here are some shots from our trip. I'm not even going to put captions. I will say, though, that the vacation was lovely. We went with friends and split a 7 bedroom house with a pool. The accommodations were wonderful. Spent 5 days in the parks and saw Jon's parents for a few days.

D.C. Sans Kids

Last week, Jon was in Boston. He drove--all 13+ hours. Uggg. I was in North Carolina. He was supposed to leave on Saturday morning, but ended up delayed until about 11am. That meant that he wouldn't be home that night. I hung up the phone, sighed, then picked up the phone again. I called a good friend who agreed to watch all my kids overnight. Then I talked to another good friend. She would take them the second night. Then I called Jon, booked a hotel, and headed north.

That night, Jon and I arrived at the hotel only 10 minutes apart. We went to a wonderful Chinese restaurant. The next morning we got up and went to a great place for brunch. The servers all wore suspenders and bow ties and there was more Mahogany trim and paneling in that place than I have ever seen. Gas lights, original paintings, gorgeous flower arrangements and a crowd even on Sunday morning. Lovely brunch.

Then we bundled up, braved the elements and headed down the street for the Smithsonian museums. We went to the National Archives and the National Museum of Art--both things we wouldn't dream of taking the kids to. I lugged that big camera everywhere and only took one picture the entire trip. Actually, Jon took it for me.

You would think that I would choose the Washington Monument or something iconic, but this painting was a must take. It is the painting that is depicted on one of our timeline cards that the kids study--St. Benedict and Monasticism. They had to see me standing next to the original. Of course, I couldn't use the flash, so even this picture isn't good. But, there it is.

That evening we headed back to the hotel and ordered pizza and a Philly cheesesteak. I asked the concierge where to find a good Philly cheese and she laughed. She is from Philly and used to work at a hotel in Philly and was always asked that question there. She hadn't heard it in years. She named a place that almost gets it right and we ordered delivery. She was right--almost right, but not quite. I love the real deal.

Then we got up the next morning at 5 and left at 6. Jon had a lunch meeting.

So, that was our whirlwind excursion without kids to D.C. It was lovely.

Fly, Fly Away!

Jon and I flew away for a week. My mom graciously caught a flight to our home and kept our 5 nestlings for 5 days. Jon and I hit the trail and headed for the mountains. We didn't even have reservations anywhere. We just flew! Based on the results, I recommend doing this once in your life.

First night: The Inn on Biltmore Estate. Ritzy and pricey, but luxurious. It was lovely.

Our truck, parked in front of the Inn on Biltmore Estate.

The mansion: 4 acres of floor space, 250 rooms, 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. The basement alone houses a swimming pool, gymnasium and changing rooms, bowling alley, servants' quarters, kitchens, and more. The grounds were originally 127,000 acres. To put that in perspective, the college where Jon works, including their woods that have miles of trails, is only 350 acres. This is basically a county unto itself. "See that mountain in the distance? The original border was just on the other side," said a tour guide. Apparently, Edith sold off all but 8 or 9 thousand acres when the government decided to invoke a land tax. Ahhh! Sigh. Only a minute fraction of the original. A small town serviced the estate.

Me posing on a garden bench, pretending to be a guest of the Vanderbilts. But they made husband and wife guests have separate rooms. No thank you. I'll just be a tourist.

I love that smile even more than the view from the veranda.

Here we are with lots of back lighting and severe morning sun on the facade of the house.

Next, we headed west to the Smoky Mountains. Contrasting Pigeon Forge and the Biltmore Estate in the same day was a study in hilarity: both ridiculous, one in high brow extravagance and one in the style of Hillbilly Vegas.

Of course, because the fall leaves were almost at peak and there was a conference in town that hosted 9,000 old people, all the decent hotel rooms were booked. I kid you not, we probably called 13 hotels before finally nailing down a room that was just passable. But really, I was very grateful that I didn't have to sleep in the truck. When you call that many hotels and get the "No room in the Inn" response, you're happy for even a stable. Ours was outdated but clean. I'll take it.

The first day we shopped at the great outlet mall that they have. I bought a great pair of shoes and jeans and a sweatshirt that doesn't make me look like a sack of potatoes. Jon made a great haul.

The next day we headed to Smoky Mountain National Park and hiked. The drive to the trail head was gorgeous. The colors arched over the parkway and entertained us with an occasional burst of red and lots of orange an yellow.

View from one of 4 bridges that we crossed along our trail.

We chose a trail that we hiked on our honeymoon (14 years ago).

Our destination.

It is the most strenuous trail in the park. It's about 4 miles round trip, but 1.1 of that hike is straight up. It's the hardest stairmaster workout you could wish for. We took our time but did well. It's called Chimney Tops. It's a mountain peak that is a rock outcropping.

To get to the summit, you have to scale the rocks. Jon chose the side that is almost straight up but short. I chose the longer and more gradual slope. Both deter a lot of hikers, but the summit is worth the final climb--panoramic mountain views for miles and miles. Just beautiful!

The ascent I chose.

One of the views from the top. It was panoramic like this.

Here we are at the top.

That afternoon we found a great two bedroom condo that had just been built. The only detractor was a busy road right outside the window. It was gorgeous though! What a blessing. We stayed there two more nights. We shopped some more and slept in and just enjoyed one another without thought of changing diapers or arranging schedules. What a great experience!

Michigan Vacation

After Mom and Dad's anniversary wedding the whole family went to Brevort Lake in the UP of Michigan for a week. Mom and Dad rented a great cabin and we brought the RV. Lots of fishing, campfires, yard games, card games, board games, swimming, sailing, and kicking back.

Welcome to the U.P. of Michigan. Our lake was just 20 minutes past the Mackinac Bridge.

Here is the cabin and the gang. We took this picture just before leaving and the wind was whipping us everywhere. Also, no one had a tripod so we used a deck chair. Crooked, but everyone is there.

Claire and Sugar on the deck.

"Stop crowding me, Sugar."

More Cuties with "Antemily".

Lori and Claire at Claire's birthday party. I swear, that is a Segraves face! Lor, you've always fit right in.

Popcorn and Sinatra on the pier with their swimsuits on.

Mom and Sugar by the sailboat.

Sinatra in the sun.

Mark and Dad going sailing. The thousand-dollar boat got a workout this week.

Happy Sinatra.

A picture of Sugar and me!!! I tried to not leave me out. I really did.

Mom and Claire cuteness.

We went to Lake Michigan toward the end of the vacation. It was freezing cold on our lake and windy, but just a few miles south the warm breeze coming off the big lake and the plentiful sunshine was wonderful. We all enjoyed the waves and the dunes.

Emily, Me, Mark -- a rare picture of all of us together.

The dunes of Lake Michigan along Hwy. 2.

Beware, the Uncle Mark sand monster...

who chases dune jumpers.

Sinatra playing on the beach at Lake Michigan.

Jonny loves Star Wars, so naturally, he is a Sith Lord.

You might want to do a few laps around...

Never mind.

Sugar and Annie exploring the sand together.

"Antemily" coming back from playing on the dunes.

Shakespeare in the waves.

And that's all, folks.
