I'm a Winner

I recently took Sinatra to get baby pictures at Wal-Mart. Gem went along. After the pictures, while I was paying, Gem noticed a sign next to a jar of mints: Guess how many for a chance to win a free 8x10. She asked if she could guess and I told her she could. "I think there's maybe . . . 120." The ladies behind the counter started laughing. They said that so many adults had tried so many ways to calculate the number and Gem walks up and nails it on the first try. The lady handed her the slip of paper and told her that she had better fill it out. We got a call today to schedule our appointment. Yea! Gem.

Toddler + sticky = ?

The toddler saga continues at my house. Popcorn has had a nasty habit of getting up in the middle of the night and waking us--usually just to ask us to put him back to bed. He also is an extremely able and willful child. For him, to think is to do. Mix all that together and you get . . .

The other night, at 3:30am, Popcorn came into our room and woke us: "Sticky, Mom. I can't get off." I thought he'd picked a booger, so I handed him a tissue and told him to get in bed. He came back in about 30 seconds and said, "Sticky, Mom. Sticky." I got up and felt his hands--very sticky plus layer of tissue. I smelled his hands--not medicine (that has happened before). Hummm. I rinsed his hands in the sink and took him back to bed. On the way I noticed a glow from the stairwell. We must have left a light on. I went downstairs to investigate and everything came into focus.

The little stinker had gone downstairs, turned on the light, pulled the kitchen chair up to the counter next to the refrigerator, climbed onto the counter, reached on top of the refrigerator for his Halloween candy pumpkin, taken it back to bed with him and devoured three suckers and a pixi stick before having sticky hands and coming to our room.

Thank God that he can't stand to be messy. If it had been Shakespeare he would have been content to continue eating--sticky hands, face, sheets, pillows, jammies and all.

Moral of this story: when you have children, include a fireproof safe on the gift registry.

A Segraves at Heart

He begged to vacuum until I gave in. It didn't take long.

Mummy's Little Egyptians

Our crowns from the Old Kingdom of Egypt are a thing of the past. We've moved on to the Early New Kingdom of Egypt, also known as Egypt's Golden Age. In this period, Pharaohs and their families were buried in the Valley of the Kings, intended as a safer place than a pyramid, which was known to robbers. Tut's tomb was so wonderfully concealed that no one found it until 1922. His famous solid gold burial mask was our inspiration for creating these museum quality reproductions.

First, shred newspaper.

Second, paste (flour/water/salt) it to a balloon. Remember to add facial features.

Third, paint many bright colors.

Fourth, put on your mask.

Hey, those Ancient Egyptians look a bit familiar.

Trick-or-Treat, Y'all

For trick-or-treating this year we had Laura Ingalls, a cowboy, Dash from the Incredibles and an adorable little dinosaur.

Popcorn really caught on this year. He ran from house to house urging, "Come on--canny". The trouble with him was getting him to the next house without eating the treat from the previous one.
